Without a referee the correctness of calculus is left to the fairness of the players; Cheating does not represent reality, hence there is no real victory or real honor.
TREBBIA RIVER battle 218 BC
The Roman Legion order of battle was well defined. Infantry in the middle and cavalry on the flanks. Centurions were asked to advance and slowly but relentlessly walk over a scared, weakened and after a while disordered enemy. Cavalry kept on the sides ready to defend the flanks from a rare attack. Encircling the Roman Legion was rare if not an impossible thought.
TRASIMENO LAKE battle 217 BC
The Roman Legion didn’t improvise, Legati, centurions, legionnaires knew exactly what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. Waging war was an art perfected in centuries of victorious battles. Without even having to worry to choose the battlefield, the glorious Roman soldier had to march to the enemy, form the ranks, and advance till the enemy had been squashed.
CANNAE battle 216 BC
The Roman Legion used to crush the enemy pushing forward like a thick wall. Centurions were well-trained soldiers, they knew exactly what to do and how to do it. The shield itself, called Scutum, was considered a weapon exactly like the Gladio (the short sword) and used together were intended as a single weapon system apt to push and stub to death anybody trying to resist.
